Dolce: Uno

Hanna wanted not just a birthday cake, but a dessert table, so people could pick a few things for dessert.  So I made her Chocolate covered strawberries because they are elegant and easy.

Virgin Aperitivo: Italian Soda for Hanna’s Party

My dad discovered this refreshing recipe for a Peach-Amaretto flavored Italian Soda, garnished with a slice of fruit.   It was a served while the guests mingled before the dinner party began.

I used my EUROPA shot glass and tall glass tumblers to measure out the ingredients, but the proportions can be changed to taste.  The order of adding ingredients is important to prevent the cream from curdling.  But you can play around with other syrup flavor and fruit pairings.

Directions:

Add several ice cubes to a tall glass and fill 3/4 of the way full with sparkling water.  Measure 1 oz of Almond syrup and pour on top of the sparking water.  Pour in 1/2 oz Peach syrup.  Top with half and half or cream.  Garnish with fruit.  Stir before serving.

Sausage and Lentil Stew

Ok, so winter might have been a better season to serve such a hearty meal, but I had so many of the ingredients on hand and it sure made some delicious leftovers!  I modified the Real Simple recipe by using Trader Joe’s Apple Chicken Sausage in place of the turkey kielbasa.  The sausage turned out to be a huge hit.

Citrus Mint Sangria

On a hot summer day preceding the evening get together of the Italy study abroad students, I was pondering which refreshing beverage I would contribute to the event.  I decided upon this bright and bubbly thirst-quencher.  An Italian Sangria, appropriate as we prepare for a year in Florence, courtesy of Food Network’s Giada De Laurentiis.   Make it virgin by substituting soda water for champagne or try ginger ale and cut back on the mint syrup.
